What is Adaptive Functioning?
Adaptive functioning refers to a set of skills and abilities that allow us to live independently, manage daily tasks, and cope effectively with the demands of everyday life when compared to others of a similar age and background. Common areas of adaptive functioning that are assessed include conceptual skills such as language, reading, writing, math, reasoning and memory; social skills such as empathy, communication, following rules, social judgement, and friendships/relationships; and practical skills such as personal care, managing money, managing school/work tasks, and taking responsibility for actions.
Assessing adaptive functioning skills can be helpful in identifying areas of strengths and difficulties in everyday and independent living skills. Understanding these can enable us to develop specifically tailored strategies and supports to help the person cope more effectively and independently, and areas of strengths can be tapped into to increase quality and meaning in life.
Note: An adaptive functioning assessment is included as part of the ADHD assessment process and costs.
